We’re moving to a new server!

posted by Patrick Crowley on May 30, 2007 at 3:51 pm

I’m very excited to announce that Cinema Treasures is moving to a new home tomorrow.

Why are we moving?
Well, as you know, our website has been quite sluggish for over a year, even as we worked very hard to upgrade and optimize our server. (It doesn’t help that our traffic doubled during the same time period.)

But, since our traffic is still growing every month, we’ve outgrown our current server, and it’s time to move Cinema Treasures to a more powerful (and expensive) server.

Will the site work during the move?
Probably not. Once we switch over, the old website will be disabled to prevent new comments or theater submissions from being lost.

When will the site return?
It’s hard to say, but our best guess is within 24 hours. Possibly much shorter, but we won’t really know until it happens.

What time will the transfer begin?
Thursday, at approximately 3pm Pacific.

We’ll do our best to ease the pain of migrating, but do expect some bumps on the road.

Given the complexity of the transfer, please be aware that you may not be able to access Cinema Treasures for up to 24 hours.

Best,
Patrick

….

UPDATE: Looks like we’re switched over! Everything seems to be working well, except email (this will probably take another day or two). Please post your comments/feedback below.

Good luck – to us all – on the server upgrade! Many thanks again, Patrick and Ross, for providing this FREE service! I’m sure it comes at no small personal expense and that is most assuredly very much appreciated!

You should have a donation section for those who would like to hrlp with the costs………….

See you at the new server! Hopefully we can post pictures again.

Thanks for your comments, guys.

Just to be clear… we won’t be doing photos just yet. But the new server is a big step towards making that possible.

Patrick, you guys have allowed us to relive many great memories. Take 25 hours. (Only kidding) Thanks for this great service. jk

As noted above by longislandmovies, you should create a donation section. Everyone enjoys the site but it’s obvious that people would like to add photos so the theater description is enhanced with the visual image. The donations hopefully would go a long way making that reality affordable.

JodarMovieFan on May 31, 2007 at 1:07 pm

It seems to be working now. I just posted a comment. Response time is a little faster but not up to FIOS speeds :) Photos would be great, video even better. The donation corner would be great, as I’m sure people would be inclined to donate something and every little bit would help.

As of 12 noon EST, 6-1-07, the site seems to be working right after an early AM outtage.

It’s not fully switched over yet, but it does seem to work if you drop the “www” prefix.

You have switched CinemaTreasures.org, but not cinematreasures.org . The .com site still says “Cinema Treasures is moving to a new server.”

.net is still moving as well. Much thanks to everyone involved, this is truly an amazing web site and its incredible how much its grown! The site is seems super fast now even on my horrible dsl service.

So no more waiting 5 minutes for pages to load when all the regulars are online, huh? I can dig it! :o)

Now we just need y'all to let us upload photos!!!

Not much of a difference visually.

Are we able to use “add a photo” yet?

alex35mm

Rick, as Patrick said above I believe photos are in the works for now but this makes a big step. I’m sure whatever they come up with its going to be classy and worth the wait.

Patrick Crowley
Patrick Crowley on June 4, 2007 at 6:39 am

Which links do you mean, longislandmovies?

(Our cinema treasures email accounts should be working soon, btw. Probably today or tomorrow.)

Ron Newman
Ron Newman on June 4, 2007 at 7:00 am

Could you please change the name of this theatre back to ‘National Theatre’ (instead of ‘National Westwood Theatre’) ?

/theaters/799/

I suspect that the server changeover ate all of the e-mails that I and other people have been sending you on this subject.

Ed Solero

I just gave the new server the ultimate CT speed test – opening the Ridgewood Theater page! It broke all records, by my account! Thanks, Patrick and Ross!

Ron Newman
Ron Newman on June 5, 2007 at 12:11 am

I’m still getting the “Cinema Treasures is moving to a new server.” page if I go to http://cinematreasures.org .

Bway
Bway on June 5, 2007 at 4:55 am

Hahahahahaha Ed, yes, that was the ultimate test, the Ridgewood Theater, LOL….and while it took a little longer to load than most of the other theaters, wow, is it fast compared to how it used to load. When I knew I was going to read the new comments on the Ridgewood Theater page, I would just click on it, go do something else, and hope it wasn’t still trying to load when I came back!

Seriously guys, great work, the site works better than ever now…..

Ed Solero
Ed Solero on June 5, 2007 at 5:45 am

Just have to figure out about the email accounts… Patrick, will email notification accounts be re-set based on the settings we had in place prior to the server switch? I’m noticing that I’m only getting notifications on pages I’ve visited and checked-off since the server change. No one wants to clog up the theater listings with extraneous comments made solely in order to turn on the notification feature.

Patrick Crowley
Patrick Crowley on June 5, 2007 at 10:33 am

@Bway — thanks!

@EdSolero — we didn’t change anything with notifications. But if something is wrong, we don’t have much ability to fix. (Really, you should be able to “watch” a theater without making a comment… I’d love to add that feature.)

@RonNewman — should get that fixed today! (You know to use .ORG, right?)

I’m still working on getting our email working, so please hold off on your emails.

Ron Newman
Ron Newman on June 5, 2007 at 10:40 am

Yep, I’m using .ORG — that’s how I can come here at all. (And you’ll fix the name of the National Theatre too, right?)

Now getting some of the ….someone responded to your comment…

Haven’t read this thread. But cinematreasures.org is currently parked, with a link to GoDaddy.

The .com and .net domains should be fixed within 24 hours. Until the redirection kicks in, they’ll appear to be parked.

Patrick Crowley
Patrick Crowley on June 6, 2007 at 8:46 am

Alright, the .com and .net domains are working for me. They may already work for some of you, as well. (It just depends on how fast your ISP updates their DNS tables.)

Vito
Vito on June 8, 2007 at 9:44 am

Patrick, I am no longer having any problems logging on, in addition I recievd an email notice today regarding this thread. However I still wonder what happens to all those theatres I had ben reciving
e-mail notifications about over the years and wonder if that is going to be a problem.
Sorry you have had to work so hard getting everything back to normal, just know, all of your efforts are very much appreciated.

Ron Newman
Ron Newman on June 8, 2007 at 9:46 am

I’m still getting plenty of e-mail notices about theatres that I have posted comments to years ago.

Bway
Bway on June 12, 2007 at 9:59 am

Vito, I just discovered I am having the same problem. The emails stopped about a week ago for me too. I didn’t notice until today, but when a few days go by, and no emails from the site, I kew something was wrong. I rely on the emails, as it keeps me in touch with the site.
It has happened once before, and then I think someone fixed something, and I got them again, and it’s been fine for about a ½ year…but now again, they stopped.
I use a hotmail address for the site, and in the past it was other hotmail people that they stopped coming too also.
Please Patrick, if there is any way you can look into the problem with me getting the emails in my account, I would apprecite it (obviously others are having the same problem, like vito above).
Thanks so much, love the site, and it’s been great since the changeover, but the last week I have been out of touch because the emails stopped!
Thanks again.

Bway
Bway on June 12, 2007 at 10:05 am

Oh I apologize Patrick, I didn’t read all the comments above, just up to Vitos…I emailed you before I read this page….hopefully the email thing will work again….

For some reason, like the last time this happened, emails only come from comments I made after the problem began about a week ago…. Sorry to bother you with the email, as I now see you are already aware of the problem…. I just hope it will work for all the other theaters too soon, as like Vito said, we don’t want to have to make a comment to every theater we want to keep in contact with in norder to get the emails again….
Thanks again for your efforts.

Vito
Vito on June 12, 2007 at 11:55 am

Bway, you will be fine, once everything got going again all was back to normal. You will find you will begin to recieve e-mail alerts of new commments to all the theatres you have posted on in the past.

Bway
Bway on June 12, 2007 at 4:36 pm

I wish it was true, I still haven’t gotten them back, not even to new comments. For example, I didn’t get one for your response even to this page….
