Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas looking towards major expansion

AUSTIN, TX — Currently operating or licensing seven locations, the Austin-based Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas hopes to expand to thirty locations by the end of 2010, by moving aggressively to a franchising model. In addition to opening six additional locations in its home state of Texas, the company will soon have its name on a new brew-and-view theater in Winchester, VA, its first out-of-state venture.

Martin, president and CEO of Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas, said revenue grew 8 percent last year, the best in the 12-year-old company’s history. He declined to disclose figures or the value of Monday’s deal.

“For years, we’ve been out franchising, and trying to find a good fit for the franchise families,” Martin said. “Norman Abdallah of Triple Tap definitely fit that mold.”

I’ve got at least TWO great locations in mind if the ever make it to San Diego.
Three, if some one, ANYONE, could put together a restoration of the California.

They should come to the NYC Metropolitan Area, where there’s a huge moviegoing population. If this nationwide thing is a success, then they should expand it worldwide. Can you say saki and a movie in Japan?

I personally like the Cinebarre theatres better. A lot more sleek and put together. The Alamo Drafthouses I’ve been to all seem like a quick conversion of whatever theatre was there before. The only drawback it seems with Cinebarre is that it’s closely tied to Regal Entertainment so they tend to pop up in old Regals, Edwards & UA’s. So if your city has a Regal on it’s last legs, maybe you’ll be getting a dinner & movie theatre sooner than you think.

Hey!! Let ‘em come here to the Boston area! We need more movie theatres here, and not just ones that play the schlockier movies of today!
