Old Paramount Theater needs equipment

posted by tegbert on July 27, 2009 at 7:37 am

We are renovating our theater to show movies as well as put on plays and have various live entertainment. We contacted a company in Salt Lake City who quoted us $88K for a digital installation including sound and $32K for 35mm + sound. We are a little confused about which technology to pursue. Purists say 35mm while others push for digital. Either way, I am afraid we would not make a profit in our small valley spending that kind of money. Is there a way to get a hold of a complete 35mm projection system without breaking the piggy bank?

You can get used and refurbed systems from a lot of places (including ebay) for less then 15k and most of the time including the platter system as well,, this includes the projector, lamphouse, platter, sound,,check it out,,,21st century cinemas in Miami Florida has a web site,Theater Equipment Supply in Ks has a site,,, there are more,,, and it will be many many years before digital takes over,, and, when you compare the price of a older 35mm one that will last for well take 4 of mine, 50 years going, to the price of a digital now that will break on you and require a SPECIAL person to come and fix it, when right now, there are still many companies that will come to you and fix easily your 35mm and for less also.

Talk to American Cinema Equipment (www.cinequip.com) in Portland, Oregon. They have tons of perfectly good used 35mm projection/sound equipment and can make you a pretty good deal.

Right you are Ken,, i hope my thoughts came across well as to what they can do,,, this was the second time i had seen where people were being led to believe that it was going to cost them a LOT, and what i mean by that was,,, ‘over zealous’ in prices

Also try www.iceco.com in Miami. They gave me a bid at half the price of ACE for reconditioned 35mm equipment.

also try my guy.. Fred Blank at tristatetheater in Memphis, Tennessee. also ebay and the guys at film-tech dot com will give you all the info you need to install most of it yourself. I was patient and it took me 3 years but I put an entire system together for less than 12 grand US$… sound and 35mm. Ray
