Thanks Elmo for the photo. I wish I had gone to the Eastgate before they tore It down. It had a huge large curved screen I hear. I think It had another cinema like It in town called the Westgate? Portland OR still has a few nice large type theatres left like the Fox Hollywood with It’s new 70mm projectors.

Thanks David for the photo image. You won’t find any theatres in the USA with such a nice water feature in the lobby.

Thanks Tinsle for the old photo. This former United Artists Theatre a 70mm roadshow house is about to be knocked down just like the SF Fox, Paramount, St Francis, Todd-AO Coronet ect. The wrecking ball is about to destroy It any day now. SF does not save their last remaining cinemas, they just rip them down for the value of the land.

Thanks Jack for the photos. Love the neon in the place. Looks like they put some front row seats up to far and will block lower screen viewing. Is this cinema in Seattle or around the area?

Go by the old United Artists Theatre and say goodbye. Many 70mm roadshow movies played here like Sound Of Music, Patton, The Bilble and L of Arabia. A sad loss to SF another movie theatre about to be torn down.

The whole place may crumble when they lift this heavy theatre up, then they can start over with a empty lot in a pricey area.

terrywade commented about Piedmont Theatre on Dec 1, 2015 at 8:16 am

Visited the Piedmont Theatre this past Sunday for the first time and was shocked the curtains worked. Maybe Landmark does care about presentation. They opened on a boring white screen and they closed after the credits on a white screen, not the way It’s done. The new seats were nice. I heard no surround sound from the side speakers. Saw the new film ‘Brooklyn’. The main center speaker had no treble to much base. When you go in you see 3 tacky light holders shinning white lights up on the red curtain, these need to be hidden from the public view and color lights added. I will visit again and hope they can fine tune this nice cinema in Oakland CA.

terrywade commented about Del Mar Theatre on Nov 23, 2015 at 7:30 pm

Sad news I have heard today Nov 23 2015 the great Del Mar Theatre along with the Nick and Aptos Twin in the Santa Cruz CA area have just been bought by Landmark Theatres. I can tell you when the nice curtains stop to work at the Del Mar Landmark won’t fix them, just like all the other cinemas they run or rent in the SF Bay Area that had curtains they will leave them broke. Lets see what they do come next month with any neon marquee issues. Goodbye to showmanship in Santa Cruz CA.

terrywade commented about Vine Theatre on Nov 20, 2015 at 12:35 pm

Dolby has a lease on this place now as a demo Dolby Cinema. They took out all the nice neon stars under the marquee since this photo was taken,so sad. They blacked all the glass so you can’t look in and have a guard standing outside. They need to open the Vine Theatre again and show movies. Hollywood is under screened, show B movies or second run.

Thanks David for the great photo. They made a big mistake removing the neon dragon marquee signs. The whole front looks dead now and dark. Time to bring some color light and neon back to the 1957 look, forget what It was in the 20’s bring in some small palm trees and turn on the fountains again and light them up with some Blue lights.

Thanks Colin for the D-150 print. The curved screen opened more for a scope movie. To bad UA tore It down in Seattle WA. It was a parking lot for years after. This theatre was one of the few domes that had a D-150 curved screen.

terrywade commented about Park Theatres on Oct 31, 2015 at 7:37 pm

Was at this cinema last week and the theatres were both a good size and had great stereo sound. One downstairs and one upstairs. I was amazed how all the stores on Pacific Ave were open and doing big business. This theatre is a gold mine as they are the only place open for films in downtown Huntington Park. You will see many other large closed theatres in the few blocks surrounding the Park Theatre. Check out the huge Warner Theatre now for sale. If someone is smart they need to buy It (Warner Theatre) and bring back entertainment to this busy area starved for a music or film theatre.

terrywade commented about Golden Gate Theatre on Oct 21, 2015 at 11:30 pm

To bad they ruined the marquee when they turned this film theatre into a live theatre in San Francisco CA. Now the building is in bad shape. The big blade ‘Golden Gate’ neon is in need of blue & gold paint and new neon tubes. Please, to paint everything ugly brown was a big mistake and remove most of the neon. Thanks Granola for the fine print.

terrywade commented about Alhambra Theatre on Oct 20, 2015 at 10:07 pm

Thanks Dallas for sharing this great sketch. The UA Alhambra Theatre was torn down many years ago for a Safeway food store. Today the only thing left of this great theatre is one of the outdoor water fall fountains on the right side of the parking lot. It no longer even works. It would be nice If Safeway stores re lit It and fixed the pumps and had the water going again with a little sign about the history of the Alhambra Theatre in East Sacramento CA they destroyed.

Thanks David for this photo I guess from the early 50’s. You won’t find any creative theatre circuits out today doing a scary stage show for the kids and fun adults today. Most multi cinemas don’t even have a stage or have any idea on how to do a Halloween type show. Bring on the Tingler and hot wire the seats plus gross out usher type zombies roaming the aisles.

Thanks Haine for showing the photo. This theatre ran many 70mm roadshow movies In It’s day. I think they turned It into a bank after It closed.

Thanks for posting info about this great Dallas Theatre. I hope some day THS does a conclave visit in the Dallas area. Many movie theatre treasures surround the Dallas area both open and closed. THS seems to keep on going back over and over to the same cities all the time. Please bring on some new places to look at like Dallas Texas!!!!!

I wonder If they showed this film in 70mm. Must have looked great on the large curved D-150 screen. To bad they split this cinema up later on!

terrywade commented about December 20th, 1972 grand opening ad on Aug 3, 2015 at 6:41 pm

This looks like It was a single large D-150 UA theatre that UA cut down the middle to make more money? The public suffered to watch a movie in a long narrow theatre. Plus you got to hear the sound from the next door cinema. Great un showmanship UA Theatres had in many cities they did splits on. The D-150 curved screen probably got taken out and tossed. Thanks again Rivest for the photo ad.
