Change of policy – 1957 Represented a definite change of policy, with the upgrading of the Esquire in preparation for the screening of Mike Todd’s “Around the World in 80 Days”.

“Cinestage”, a 35mm process

“Around the World in 80 Days” screened at the Esquire in “Cinestage”, a 35mm process which produced a brighter & sharper picture than CinemaScope, with a marginally smaller aspect ratio. The result : an anamorphic print with 1.56 squeeze giving a ratio on screen of 2.2 to 1 – The Cinestage format was a reduction from the 65mm 24 fps. negative. In practice it uses the standard 4 track magnetic sound (AP) system, but with split surround. The change wiped out five rows of the front stalls. Projection equipment at the Esquire utilized Gaumont Kalee 21’s with Kalee Varamorph lenses, sitting in front of Mole Richardson arcs. The sound was Westrex with Perspecta intergrators.

 •
Hoyts Esquire Theatre 238 Bourke Street, Melbourne, VIC – South Pacific in TODD-AO – 1959

Todd-AO (70mm format) is a practical scientific system developed by American Optical Company engineers under the direction of Dr. Brian O’Brien, to bring into being an idea envisioned by Michael Todd. The goal was to develop “a motion picture system that would photograph action in very wide angle … with one camera … on one strip of film … to be projected from a single machine … on a very large screen … with a quality so perfect that the audience will be part of the action, not just passive spectators.”

South Pacific at the Esquire *

South Pacific at the Esquire was the first 70mm production to screen in Melbourne. This required a new larger screen (less curved) and a new wall to wall proscenium. A special stage curtain was installed featuring a motive of hibiscus flowers. The rake was steeper & the floor of the projection booth had to raised. Hoyts installed Philips DP70 projectors with Ashcraft lamp-houses.

Print wear *

It took three prints of South Pacific to complete the season, the first screened 946 performances, the second 795, and the third finished with 132 performances.

Record number of performances *

South Pacific screened from (Feb 1959 to Nov 1961) that’s 146 weeks for a total of 1873 performances. Screening with South Pacific was a short demo featurette called “The Miracle of Todd-AO".

 •
In the 1970’s, the now defunct Newington Drive-In Theater, in Newington, New Hampshire, offed a special price on their double feature screenings: Five Dollars Per Car-Load. It seemed like a good fiscal decision to pile as many people into the car, including the trunk, to capitalize on the savings. The problem was, that you needed more speakers to hear the movie, but we really weren’t there for the movie anyhow.

Tony Fenelon is a much celebrated international organist who spent much of his early years performing at the Regent Wurlitzer. Tony was encouraged by the late GRAEME HODGES who at the time was the head of Hoyts in Victoria - Graeme gave him the keys to the cinema so that he could rehearse or perform when-ever he pleased. Tony recorded on the Crest & Festival record labels.
