That’s right. The old Bellvue became the Lux. My parents would often take me to the long gone theatre on many a Saturday night. I have very fond memories of the theatre.

How I would have loved to have been old enough to have been in that cinema.

I was never in the famous old BEAVER theatre ‘way west on Dundas West near High Park and Pacific Avenues. Though I lived north of Dundas between Bathurst and Ossington I remember walking to the building that was the former Beaver with a friend (Maurice) when I was approximately 12 years old. I would love to be able to see a picture of the Beaver interior from its golden years before it was closed forever in 1961, one of the first theatres ( in my memory ) that closed so early. With dwindling attendance it was uncerimoniously closed with no attempt to make the theatre work in some capacity for the Junction.

It was never used as a porn house as suggested. That was never remotely possible as it closed years before porn was even a reality. In any case, Toronto never had porn theatres like most cities in the U.S. being the very conservative city it was, literally shutting down on Sundays…. no shopping, no cinemas etc. In the 80’s the Metro + the Eve showed restricted ‘X’ films, but they were anything but hard core. Cruder material now shows on television. As stated Toronto never had a true porn theatre which would indicate just how puritanical the city was until the 1980’s.

It would appear to me that the La Salle Theatre on Dundas Street West in Totonto was open far longer than 1955. I’m sure that piece of information is erroneous. Even as an adult I can remember going by the area with the same proprietors or workers still around. If anything, I’m sure it closed towards the end of the sixties.
