Apollo Theatre 331 Burwood Road, Hawthorn, VIC - 1934
Manresa Hall was built at 331 Burwood Road, Hawthorn in 1934 by the “Fathers of the Jesuit Order of the Immaculate Conception”, and for a brief time became the home of dances, concerts and meetings.Later that year George Young approached the order with the idea of converting the hall into a cinema. This would entail the installation of a screen & the construction of a projection booth and the purchase of equipment. Mr Young’s offer was accepted and the Apollo Cinema was opened on 29th September 1934, by the Mayor of Hawthorn, with the lessee confirmed as Mr. George Young.
