I believe this is one of the last of the non-stadium style theaters in the Los Angeles area. It shows first-run films, many with Spanish subtitles, and is popular with Latino-Americans in the East LA greater area. It’s seen better days – is somewhat gone to seed although still quite visitable, and doesn’t draw the crowds it used to. It opened March 23, 1980, and was operated by Pacific Theatres until May 2011, when Regency Theatres took over.

Regency has taken over this theatre as of now. It is newly posted on thier website.
From the looks of it, Pacific is still running it for the rest of the week. Regency takes over Friday.
The Rivest website is being corrected to show it to open in 1977. The infomation that I had was not as accurate as it is now.
Pacific’s Commerce Theatre opened as a fourplex on March 23, 1980. It was remodelled and expanded to a sevenplex opening on April 26, 1991. Today it is a 14 plex operated by Regency Theatres. The Commerce was the first new multiplex theatre designed and built in the United States to serve the Hispanic Community.
“The Rocketeer” was presented at Pacific’s Commerce Theatres in 35mm Dolby Stereo beginning on Friday June 21, 1991.
The last time I was there (March 2016) they had torn the seats out of all the older “flat” auditoriums and were in the process of putting in new seats. If the two auditoriums where the process has been completed are any guide, the new seats will not be as comfortable as the old. The newer stadium-style auditoriums aren’t bad, but except for one or two they are on the smallish side. At least Regency seems to be trying to make a go of this theater, which is encouraging.

Update: The new seats that were put into the auditoriums that were being redone last time I was there are plush and the rows are spaced wide apart. Not so great for those of us who like to put their feet up — even the longest legs won’t reach — but very comfortable and the public seems to appreciate them. Attendance was decidedly up from what it’s been previously. Maybe this theater has a future after all.
