The State Shopping Block was an attempt at vertical retail arcades, with space for 150 shops over 11 floors. The concept did not flourish, and the building has been used for most of its life as the office headquarters of the Greater Union Organization, along with its varied associated companies. (Union Theatres previously operated from Film House 251a Pitt Street – built in 1913, and still standing - just around the corner).
