There’s a Palace Theatre listed at 414 5th St S in the 1927 Lethbridge City Directory, so it seems this theatre was open as the Palace before it became the Capitol in 1929.
The grand opening ad from October 9th, 1929 is in the photo section.
The stately old CAPITOL THEATRE in Lethbridge was a partnership between Mr. A. W. Shackleford and Famous Players Canadian Corporation. It was built in 1928 and torn down for a mall project in 1974 that include two new modern Famous Players Theatres. Mr. Shackleford and Famous Players were partners nearly 50 years and this included the new Paramount Theatre in 1949!!
The address for the Capitol in Lethbridge was 414 5th Street South.
The Capitol in Raymond and Lethbridge were indeed 2 separate theatres. The Capitol in Raymond is now the site of a video rental and ice cream shop. The Lethbridge Capitol was demolished in 1974 to make way for the Lethbridge Centre Mall and Tower, which included the Lethbridge Centre twin Cinemas, which opened in 1975 and are now closed/renovated to other purposes.
In regards to the movie theatres in Lethbridge and in Raymond, I have attended movies in BOTH locations for MANY years and they were two totally separate entities! How I wish I could once again walk into these two theatres!
If you read my comment, I noted that some of these small Canadian towns get subsumed into the larger city, i.e Raymond into Lethbridge, such that the small city no longer exists separately. That’s why I wouldn’t add the theater in Raymond pending confirmation that this is not an exurb of Lethbridge.
If the two theaters are the same, then the opening date given in the introduction is incorrect.
The sale of the Capital (sp?) Theatre in Raymond was reported in the Lethbridge Herald in September 1968. The Brewerton family had owned the Capital since 1912. I assume that Raymond is a separate city in Alberta, but sometimes these Canadian suburbs get lumped into the main metro area. If anyone recalls this theater in Raymond, let me know.
