The Empire’s original columned semi-circular portico was demolished in March 1940, when a heavy lorry skidded into it in the black-out. The owner regarded the feature as ‘old fashioned’, and replaced it with a canopy. At the same time the entrance of a single pair of double doors was replaced with two pairs of oak double doors. There must have been internal damage, as a new terrazzo floor was laid in the entrance and the area redecorated.
