Thalia Theater

What was formerly a church, was converted into a gorgeous little Art Deco style cinema in 1919. The church hall was turned into the auditorium, the presbytery into a coffee-room. With it’s balcony, it seated 480 patrons. It was not the town’s first theater, the "Cycloop" had opened around the corner in the Visseringstraat in 1911, but closed in 1925.

Thalia Theater itself had a drop of patronage in the 1960’s, with a final screening in 1969.

The building has since been used by the local government as a storage warehouse, until it was bought by Hotel/Restaurant Augusta in 1997.

In 1997 the exterior and interior were partly restored by it’s current owners, nearby Hotel Augusta. They use the venue for events, live theater and stage plays, concerts or rent it out for parties, meetings and weddings.

Although the ticket booth and many other elements were restored or replaced with decorations in the Art Deco / Amsterdam School style, the projection booth had unfortunately partly been replaced by a bar to accommodate the guests at the tables on the now sectioned balcony, and thus disabling a practical way of showing films (on film), although video-projection is no problem. The local City Theater of Velsen programed live plays and stage shows weekly. It had closed by early-2024.
