The Garry can also be seen several times in the horror film “Silent Night” (2012).

I still have the 25th ticket from the grand opening of The Garry Theatre. But this one was in Fort Garry. Originally owned by the owner of the Park theatre on Osborne st.

you can see the Garry’s neon in the background in two night scenes of the movie “New In Town” [2009] starring Renee Zellweger

While I don’t have specific dates, this theatre was originally destroyed by fire, and eventually rebuilt in it’s present location. The Theatre was formerly owned by “Roke-May” Cinemas (following the amalgamation of the Roke Family and May Family businesses), and later bought by Landmark Cinemas.

It does have a single screen, and a 3 platter film delivery system. In approximately 1989, the theatre converted from the carbon lighting system, and it was one of the last in Canada to do so.

For those of you not aware, (2) carbon robs formed an arc which created the brilliant light to illuminate behind the film and create the projection. The brilliant light also created substantial heat, which to the projectionists frustration and the audiences awe, occasionally caused a “melt-down”, or the melting of a film frame on screen.

As it’s company name accurately portrays, the Garry Theatre is a true Landmark, and should never be demoloshed.

….so you Selkirkians' get out there and support you theatre and your childhood memories, so that a new generation of kids can “go to the show” !!!

I’ve been seeing movies at this theatre since before I can remember and have spent many an hour there. I hope it stays forever.
