The Park Theater, located in the historically black North Greenwood neighborhood, was Clearwater’s "Negro theater" in the pre-integration years. The theater was operating prior to 1949, and was closed by or during the 1970’s; integration undoubtedly contributed to the demise of this neighborhood theater.

The building has since been used for a few other ventures. It was converted to a nightclub, La Copa, in 1981. In 1985, the club’s owner flirted with the idea of closing the nightclub and turning it into a community center.

The theater is currently abandoned and appears to be in decent shape, at least on the exterior. Despite some local improvements, North Greenwood remains blighted and the theater is located across the street from the projects.

North Greenwood Avenue was renamed North MLK Avenue in the early-2000’s.

Last time I was in Clearwater they had almost finished that new bridge to Clearwater Beach.

Anyone have more info or old photos of the Park.
