Willowbrook Mall Cinema

The description of this theatre is incorrect. This is the General Cinema 6 plex that ran inside Willowbrook Mall. The AMC 8 (then 10) was across the street in Willowbrook Commons. AMC took over this theatre as part of the GCC Bankruptcy and ran it for a brief time.

Actually The Mall Opened In 1981.

Actually, there are a few of the older theaters in Houston still open. Loews Easton Commons is now Studio Movie Grill Copperfield. Loews Spring is now an updated AMC. I believe the 2nd run theater by NASA is still there, too. I know the old Tomball theater has been renovated. The oldest one, River Oaks, is still alive and well(as it should be). In my opinion, AMC should have never closed the Willowbrook mall theater when they aquired GCC. They should have kept it going as a 2nd run theater. That way, it would have been rebranded as AMC Classic by now and would look the same as it did 30 years ago. Oh well.

Sadly, it seems there are no photos of this GCC anywhere on the internet. Which is a shame since this place was my childhood theater. My parents always took me here in the early 90 s and I can only operate from childhood memory as to what this place looked like. All I remember are entrances from the outside and in the food court as well as a staircase leading to the restrooms and the GCC logo. You can see their coming attractions and feature presentation bumpers on YouTube from that era and I remember seeing those too. I recently visited Houston and stopped by this mall and you can no longer even tell a movie theater was once here. H&M and several other store fronts have taken the space at some point and the mall seems to have been renovated. Surely somebody who worked for GCC or was managing this theater back then has pictures, but they probably aren’t aware of this site. I would hate to think this place has been banished to the corners of our memories.

Coryrr1, I completely agree with you. I remember going to this theater as well as the AMC 10 across the street and the AMC Commerce Park 8 numerous times back in the 90’s. Back before stadium seating was the norm, when we all had ground seating and the movies felt like “the movies”. I miss those theaters. If they still existed with the same type of ambiance as back then, I’d gladly go there over a newer one.

Does anyone remember which spot in the Willowbrook Commons is where the AMC 10 used to be? It has been so long that I can not remember where exactly it was in that shopping strip. there.

AMC did not operate this theatre long as they had the Willowbrook 10 theatre across the street in The Commons shopping center (which was just demolished for an Academy Sporting Goods store). The Willobrook 6 GCC sign, although painted black, still is standing at the far end of the mall on FM1960 near the railroad tracks.

scottneff-It’s been about 20 years since I was at this theater so I am operating from memory. I recall the cinema being located adjacent to where the food court is today in the mall. The 1156 in your address refers to a store location in the mall. That address now belongs to a store called Imaginations which is currently at that spot in the mall. I believe this was originally a GCC theater which was taken over by AMC when GCC went bankrupt in the late 1990’s. It was closed shortly after when AMC opened it’s 24 multiplex nearby.
