Originally built as an indoor farmers' market in the late-19th century. The market had trouble competing with other markets with better locations, and it was converted to a movie theatre in 1912. The Montgomery Theatre was a last-run house that stopped showing movies in 1936. Since then the building has at various times housed a bowling alley, pool hall, nightclub and appliance store.

As of 2012, parts of the building housed neighborhood retail stores and there was a proposal to operate baseball batting cages in the former theatre area. Demolition began January 2018 for an apartment building to be built on the site.
