I’d long heard tales about a Pavilion Cinema in Bridgend, Glamorgan. However, I had always assumed that this cinema was actually the Grand Pavilion in nearby Porthcawl. It now appears I’ve made a mistake and there was actually a Pavilion Cinema in Bridgend.
The hall was first operating some time in the early-1920’s and ceased to function in 1940, soon after the 1,324-seat Embassy Cinema opened. At that time George Issacs Bridgend Cinemas Ltd. had a monopoly of the cinemas in the Bridgend area. The most likely scenario, to my mind, being that four cinemas offered too many seats for a town of 10,033 residents. Thus the Pavilion Cinema, oldest of the halls was closed.
