Savoy Cinema

Located in Oldbury, West Midlands, now a district in the southwest of Greater Birmingham. The Picture House was next to the Canal Bridge on Birmingham Street, and was built in 1926 on the site of a previous Picture House which dated from 1911.

The Picture House was designed by architect Way Lovegrove and had seating provided in stalls and circle levels. It was equipped with a British Talking Pictures(BTP) sound system in the early-1930’s. In 1939 it became part of the J.F. Emery Circuit, and was re-named Savoy Cinema.

In 1946 it was taken over by the Miles Jervis chain and was equipped with a British Acoustics(BA) sound system. The Savoy Cinema was closed on 22nd March 1958 with Jack Palance in “I Died a Thousand Times”. The reason for closure was given as the high rate of Entertainment Tax at that time.

It never re-opened and was sold to the Midland Electricty Boad, but nothing happened and the building stood derelict until it was eventually demolished in 1979.
