M.I. Theater

Located on Mare Island Naval Shipyard, across the water to the west of Vallejo, CA. It is on Walnut Avenue at the corner of D. Street. The Post Exchange Theatre was operating prior to 1930, when it was equipped with a Western Electric(WE) sound system.

In 1937 it was renamed Mare Island Theatre and was still operating in 1946. The building still survives (unused) in the now closed-down Navel Shipyard.

A good friends memory of M.I. theatres (Vicky), mentions: When we were on base in 1972 They were already reducing the number of showings at the Mare Island theatre, and started using the Rodman Theater (the other movie theater on base) as part of the social activites center. She remembers, the Olympic sized pool was located there and alon with a really nice bowling alley.

My recollection from living on M.I. from 1946 to1949 were three theaters operating, all referred to as “centers”. Rodman, Tisdale, and Owens. Rodman was a full rec center with pool/gym/store/etc.. Owens was located in the hospital area and was also a rec center. Tisdale was a small bldg. & Theater.
