Plaza Cinema

Located in Darwen, Lancashire. The Palladium Cinema was opened around 1920. It had a 24 feet wide proscenium. From 1928 it became part of the H.D. Moorhouse circuit, and it was equipped with a British Talking Pictures(BTP) sound system in 1930. In the late-1930’s it was equipped with a Western Electric(WE) sound system.

Around 1955, it was equipped with CinemaScope, and the cinema was taken over by the Cheshire County Cinemas chain and re-named Plaza Cinema. By 1961 it had been taken over by the Leeds based Star Cinemas chain, and they operated the Plaza Cinema until it was closed on 18th November 1971 with Candice Bergan in “Soldier Blue”.

The building today has been converted into a pub named ‘The Bridgewater’.
