This was one of the last Trans-Lux Inflight Theatre’s to open in North Carolina after the successful opening of Trans-Lux Inflight Theatre’s that were being built across the state in towns like High Point, Burlington, Greensboro, Kinston, and Winston-Salem. Located in the Zayre Plaza Shopping Center right off South Cannon Boulevard between the towns of Kannapolis and Concord, the Trans-Lux Inflight Theatre was the last single screen theatre in North Carolina that opened on March 28, 1975. It had a seating capacity of 359.

Trans-Lux operated this theatre until mid-1976 when it folded and changed hands under new management when the name changed to the Cinema where it showed second-run films at discount prices.

Later on it became the notorious Joy Adult Theatre that was also under new management when the format switched from second run films to “XXX” rated features until it’s closing in 1981.

This location opened rather late for a Trans-Lux Inflight Cine'; five years after the other North Carolina Inflight Cine’s had opened and a year after they closed their first NC theater (Kinston). The Trans-Lux Kannapolis opened about the same time as Stewart & Everett was reopening the theater (renamed Plaza Cinema) Trans-Lux had closed the previous year. I would be surprised if Trans-Lux used 16mm projection in the Kannapolis theater if it opened in 1975; 16mm flopped miserably elsewhere in 1970 (why watch 16mm projection when there was a real cinema downtown, the Gem?). Trans-Lux was out of North Carolina by 1976; all of the former Inflight Cine’s in the Piedmont (Burlington, Greensboro, High Point, Kannapolis, Charlotte) were turned into pornhouses.
