Broadway Cinema

Located in the Filwood Park-Knowle West district to the south of Bristol City Centre. The Broadway Cinema was opened in 1938 by Roy Chamberlain. It had a 30 feet wide proscenium and was equipped with a British Talking Pictures(BTP) sound system.

It was re-furbished in 1961 and began part time bingo on several evenings a week. Cinema use ended in 1971 and it became a full-time bingo club which closed in 1992. The building stood unused and stripped out internally and awaiting demolition. It was announced in September 2022 that planning permission had been granted to demolish the former cinema and housing would be built on the site. Demolition began in April 2023.

Channel 4 news on January 3rd 2017 had item re redevelopment of Bristol. Camera caught this derelict cinema, the Broadway. Seen in CT without the metal fence but I imply it will soon make way for new homes.

As of January 2023 this cinema is about to be demolished for flats however there is a protest group trying to getting at least the facade retained. Also pictured in recent Daily Telegraph article about the need for a new “grade 3” listing for buildings of importance but unqualified for a higher grading.
