The building that housed the Rialto in Hallowell began life as a Universalist Church built on the southeast corner of Central and Second Streets in 1843.The parish was active for about fifty years. The church was sold in the late 1930s and became the Rialto movie theater. It later became a warehouse and fell into disrepair.

The Theatre Historical Society on-line archive has the MGM Theatre Report for the Rialto; it’s Card # 377. Address is Second Street. There is an exterior photo dated May 1941. Condition is Fair. The report says it was over 15 years old, was showing MGM films, and had 294 seats. The 1940 population was 2,900.
