Palace Picture House

In Bolton, the Palace Picture House was a conversion of the derelict Phythean Street Chapel, and opened in 1909. The proprietor was Palace Picture House (Bolton) Ltd. “Pictures and Variety” were being advertised, with the variety acts supplied by Percy Hall, Oxford Road, Manchester. The stage was 9ft deep, and there were two dressing rooms. By 1932 it had been equipped with a Western Electric(WE) sound system.

The 1940 edition gives the proscenium width as 30ft.

By the 1953 edition the proprietor was listed as Gardowan Cinemas Ltd, Palladium, Bolton. The Palace Cinema closed in November 1957.

By the time I visited, in August 2002, the building was being used by Church Wharf Garage, which use continues.
