Royal as in 1984

In the Staffordshire town of Fenton, near Stoke-on-Trent, the Royal Cinema is listed in the 1914 Kinematograph Year Book. At that time it was owned by Chaltones, Hughes and Harper and had 300 seats.

By the 1931 edition ownership had transferred to Harper and Ashton Ltd, and a sound-on-disc system was being used.

By the 1940 edition an AWH sound system had been installed. That listing records a seating capacity of 700, so the auditorium had clearly been extended.

By 1953 ownership had transferred to B.H.D. Theatres Ltd., and seating capacity had been reduced to 600. The Royal Cinema closed in April 1960. It was converted into Roberto’s nightclub.

When I visited, in March 2009, the building was boarded up. However, more recently, it has become home to JMP Windows, a window installation service.
