Slieker Film

Slieker Film is the new movie theater on the Wilhelminaplein in Leeuwarden, located in the new Fries Museum together with Café Thus and Frisian Resistance Museum. The new movie theater was officially opened on Thursday, March 21, 2013 followed by the six-day Dutch, Flemish & Frisian Film Festival.

Previously Slieker Film was named Filmhuis Leeuwarden and situated in the Ruiterskwartier next to the Theater De Harmonie. George Christiaan Slieker in fact showed as the first Dutchman a movie on the same square in 1896! This film was showed in his theater tent “Grand Théatre Edison” at the fair. He then went with his traveling cinema by the province and the country. He then entered the record books as the first Dutch cinema entrepreneur.
