Victoria Theatre

The Royal Victoria Theatre was opened in 1842. It was designed by architectural firm McCulloch & Fairley. Alterations were made in 1903 to the plans of architect William Alexander and by 1905 it was operating as a variety theatre named Gaiety Theatre. Films were being screened as part of the variety programme from 5th December 1905 when it was equipped with electric light. In October 1915 it was re-named Victoria Theatre and became a full time cinema.

Around the early-1930’s it went back to live theatre use, with just an occasional film. It was equipped for sound in 1935 when a British Thomson-Houston(BTH) sound system was installed. Around this time it was taken over by the J.B. Milne Theatres circuit who operated it as a cinema until it was closed and demolished in May 1990 after structural faults were found in the building. The site today is a car park for the Little Theatre.
