County Cinema

The County Cinema was opened on 12th September 1938 with Shirley Temple in “Heidi”. It was operated by the J.B. Milne Theatres chain, based in Dundee. It was equipped with a British Thomson-Houston(BTH) sound system. An unusual feature was the reverse rake in the stalls floor which sloped down from the rear of the auditorium then sloped up toward the screen.

In July 1970 it became a cine-bingo operation which lasted for the next 3 and a half years. It was sold to Minor Bingo Entertainments and was re-named Rio Cinema from 12 April 1971. It was closed as a cinema in early-1974. Rio Bingo Club continued for a while, but by the early-1980’s the building was vacant. It was demolished around 1985 and housing was built on the site.
