Picture Palace

Located in the village of Pinxton, on the Nottingamshire/Derbyshire border, to the north of Nottingham. The Picture Palace was was opened in 1911. By 1920 it was operated by Midland Empire Theatres Ltd. of Normanton. It unusually had a sweet shop located in the centre of the façade, with entrance to the cinema on each side of it. It presented pictures & occasional variety and had a 14ft deep stage and four dressing rooms. Around 1930 it was equipped with a Harley sound system. By 1937 it was operated by Ollerton Pictures Ltd. By 1944 a British Thomson-Houston(BTH) sound system had been installed.

By 1958 Ollerton Pictures Ltd. were still the operators and it had been equipped with CinemaScope with a 22ft wide proscenium. The Picture Palace was still listed in the Kine Yearbook of 1966, but another source stated it closed in 1959, another source says closure came in December 1960. It was converted into a bingo club. It had certainly closed by 1980. The sweetshop was still operating in the 1990’s. It has been demolished for car parking space.
