After seeing the success the Pawnee Opera House was having with motion pictures, Al Peters brought the town its first and last motion picture theatre. The Photoplay Theatre was opened in the Davenport Hardware Store in downtown Pawnee Rock in 1919. “Daddy Long Legs” opened the theatre on November 1, 1919 to capacity crowds.

The theatre’s usage of the electric piano from the Pawnee Opera House was discontinued after patrons were disappointed in its performance. A new electric piano drew rave reviews. That is until, December 25, 1920 when the Photoplay Theatre appears to have gone out of business after a showing “The Last Battalion”.
