City Theatre

Located in Limerick, County Limerick. Opened as the Ritz Cinema in 1950 by the O’Sullivan Brothers, with the help of C.J. Wilberforce Raphael, it was no sooner open until it closed probably owing to the strike which hit most of the city’s cinemas. Its reputation was for older films along with the odd talent show. It was reopened in 1953 as the City Theatre by the Bourke family. Films were included but the staple operation seems to have been as a theatre. It was empty and up for sale by 1976 and later became Shannon’s furniture & carpet store. It was empty again as of June 2017 as the company had moved address.

On the Ritz’s birthday on the 28th of January 1963 a performance called “The Christmas Cracker” was held. The performances lasted four weeks, with surprise appearences from the likes of Sean Meaney.
