Palace Cinema

Located in the villages of Codford St Mary & Codford St Peter, Wiltshire, to the southeast of Warminster. The Palace Cinema was opened by 1915 when it was operated by the Albany Ward Circuit. The auditorium ran parallel to the street with the entrance on the right of the building. Al seating was on a single level. In 1916 a large army training camp was built in Codford village where thousands of soldiers from Australia & New Zealand were prepared to go to France to fight in World War I, and the Palace Cinema probably became their entertainment outlet. By the early-1920’s it was operated by D. Stratton and a Mr. B. Davis was the manager. It was also listed as operating for a while as the Empire Palace Cinema. It closed in the early-1920’s and has since been demolished.

Today there is a building on the High Street which has operated as the Woolstore Theatre, housing an amateur theatre company since 1928. It is a single storey building with an entrance at the right of the auditorium, which runs parallel to the street.

The Woolstore Theatre is a different building, the Palace having been demolished years ago.
