Malai Rama Theatre

Located in the Mueang Lop Buri District, the capitol of Lopburi. The Malai Rama Theatre was quite a large cinema with seating in orchestra and balcony levels. It was opened in the mid-1970’s. It was closed around 2003. It became a snooker hall at the rear and a car wash operated in front of the building. It now sits completely abandoned.

It made the news in 2020 due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. The city is famed for its ruined temple buildings and hoards of over 6,000 macaque monkeys (which are a tourist draw). Due to Lockdown, the tourists are not around and the monkeys have taken over the city. Their base is inside the old cinema, with the projection room used as a burial area (intruders are attacked if they enter this space).
