Majestic Theatre

Located on Dee Street, between Esk Street and Tay Street. Seating was provided in stalls and balcony levels. The Albion Picture Theatre was opened on 22nd April 1916 and was a conversion of the 1890-built Albion Hotel. It was re-named Majestic Theatre in 1928. By 1950 it was operated by the Kerridge-Odeon chain. By 1968 it was operated by the Fullers Theatres chain. It was possibly closed in the early-1980’s and was demolished in 1985.

In 1992 the 5-screen Reading Cinemas was built on the site (it has its own page on Cinema Treasures).

The Albion Hotel was converted to become this picture theatre and the hotel/theatre’s buildings dating from 1890 were demolished in 1985. As reported in The Referee in February 1917, Mr Palmer Gore took over as manager of the Albion Theatre (having previously managed “His Majesty’s Theatre” in Christchurch). A 1914 article in the Southland Times suggests that it may briefly have been also referred to as “Everybody’s Theatre”.
