Prince's Cinema

In Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, the Prince’s Hall Cinema opened on 25th April 1912. It was a very large building, and, quite plausibly, some sources say it was previously a skating rink. Certainly, 15 billiard tables were housed behind the screen, and the cinema auditorium could seat 1,100 patrons. The manager was Fred Carlton.

Unfortunately, the rear of the Prince’s Hall faced the Trent and Mersey Canal, and the building was often plagued with rats, which would scurry around the auditorium once the lights had gone down!

When the ‘talkies’ arrived, Picturetone sound was installed. At this time, the cinema was renamed the Prince’s Cinema. Later on, a BA [British Acoustic] system was installed.

The Prince’s Cinema closed onn16th July 1955 with James Stewart in “The Far Country”.

Builders' merchants Jones and Shufflebottom took over the building, but it has subsequently been demolished in favour of new road systems in the area.
