Located off the Market Place in Cooper’s Row in Wigan, Lancashire. The Alexandra Music Hall was opened on 6th April 1874. It was operated by William Johnson. In the early-1900’s films projected on the Bioscope were part of the variety programme. It soon became the first full-time cinema in Wigan and was re-named Empire Palace Cinema. By 1925 it had been re-named Empire Cinema. In 1929 it was equipped with a Western Electric(WE) sound system and Al Jolson in “The Singing Fool” ran for a month, screening 3 shows a day.

In the mid-1950’s it was equipped with CinemaScope. The Empire Cinema was closed on 30th September 1961. It was converted into a bingo club which closed in the mid-1970’s. It had been demolished by the 1990’s.
