Ye Olde Picturedrome

Lydd is a small town on the Romney Marsh in Kent. In 1912 a tithe barn, which had been used to store grain, was converted into Ye Olde Picturedrome by a local farmer, Thomas William Paine.

Despite its distinctly rustic nature, the Picturedrome marketed itself as a high class establishment, and featured live music. Indeed, in 1917, manager Mr Bertram was advertising in New Era magazine for lady musicians to play the piano, violin and cello.

However, Mr Paine was then one of the local businessmen who got together to build the Cinema (later Playhouse/Regal, see separate Cinema Treasures entry). That opened in 1916, and the Picturedrome duly closed.

By around 1921, the barn was home to a skating rink. Then, in 1936, it was struck by lightning and was later pulled down.

A pavilion stands on the site, opposite the village green, which is known as The Rype.
