Royalty Theatre

Originally the Prince of Wales Theatre it was redesigned in 1882 by architect B.E. Entwhistle in a Tudor Revival style (like many buildings in historic Chester). Reopening as the Royalty Theatre. Seating was provided in orchestra, dress circle and balcony levels. In 1898 films were part of the programme. From 1910 it had a Cinematograph Licence which was renewed each year into the late-1920’s. It never went over to sound films.

The Royalty Theatre became a variety theatre, attracting top stars and presenting pantomimes at Christmas. In 1958, the interior was ‘modernised’ removing the original decorations. In 1960 it became a bingo club. Wrestling was also featured, but the Royalty Theatre was closed by late-1966. By 4th February it had been converted into a skateboard park named Skateboard City, but this did not last long. Around 1989-1990, the building was sold and it was still standing in 1992. It has since been demolished and a Premier Inn Hotel now stands on the site.
