Originally one of five Black-oriented movie theatres/performance venues in Cincinnati owned by the Goldman family. Its sister theatres were the Roosevelt Theatre in Downtown, the Lincoln Theatre in the West End, the Beecher Theatre in Walnut Hills, and most famously, the Regal Theatre also in the West End. By the 1970’s, the only one of those theatres still operating and still in the Goldman family was the Regal Theatre.

The Roxy Theatre was opened in 1949. In May 1962, the then-manager of the theatre, Moses Edward McCray, shot a patron, Frank Spencer, in a killing McCray insisted was self-defence, claiming Spencer was harassing a female employee, and pulled a knife on him refusing to leave. He was initially tried on first-degree murder, and was ultimately found guilty of first-degree manslaughter, for which he served 9 years of a 1-20 year sentence.
