“The Sound of Music” with Julie Anthony had a good run in 1983, followed by a short return to Sydney of the “Jesus Christ Superstar” touring company. Light opera returned 18th February 1984 with “The Pirates of Penzance” featuring Jon English. Enjoying a three month smash hit run, this was the Regent’s last major presentation - it was good to see the theater go out on a high. Last live performance was by quirky American rock guitarist Ellen McIlwaine (supported by Jeff St John) on Saturday 19th May 1984. The end of entertainment of any sort at the Regent came the following Saturday 26th May 1984 with prolific snow ski documentary filmmaker Warren Miller presenting his latest feature “Ski Time” (1983). It was to be the last public performance at the Sydney Regent Theatre.
