Electric Picture Palace

In the Rutherglen district of Glasgow, the Electric Picture Palace was opened on 3rd February 1911 by Rutherglen Electric Theatre Ltd. Despite its name, this appears to have been anything but a “Palace”: the long, low structure had a dingy, gas-lit auditorium, running parallel to the street, with exposed roof trusses and rows of wooden benches on a bare planked floor!

According to the 1923 Kinematograph Year Book, by that time the resident manager was A. Sharp, and performances were continuous, with two changes of programme each week.

Hopelessly outdated even in 1930, the Electric Picture Palace closed that autumn. The building was used as a billiard hall until 1960; it was demolished around 1968.
