Dating back in the La Crosse Tribune and city directories to 1905-1906, the Tribune reported Al Jolson appeared here April 23, 1907, four years before his Broadway success.

A local citizen, commenting in the Tribune, wrote the Bijou Theatre had a neon sign that flashed off and on ‘10 cents’ and was known as ‘the shooting gallery’ owed to the number of western played. The Bijou Theatre also played serials such as “The Green Hornet”.

The Tribune notes the 400-seat theatre closed in July 1939 and has been occupied by Big Al’s Pizza since 1979.
