Located in the small coal mining village of what was known as Thornley Colliery, to the west of Wheatley Hill, County Durham. The Ritz Cinema was opened on 30th March 1939. It was closed during World War II. It didn’t reopen until the mid-1950’s and it finally made the lists in Kinematograph Yearbooks by 1958. It was operated by Thornhall Cinemas Ltd, and was equipped with a GB-Kalee sound system and CinemaScope. There were three changes of programme a week. It had gone from listings by 1961.
