The Drive-In Theatre off the intersections of Fort Jackson Boulevard, Cross Hill Road, and DeVine Road was the first drive-in theatre to be built in Columbia, and opened its gates with a 300-car capacity on September 10, 1941 with Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy in the 1939 film “The Flying Deuces” along with the 1939 Donald Duck cartoon “Officer Duck” and the 1940 Three Stooges short “Boobs In Arms”.

The theatre was renamed the Starlite Drive-In in 1948.

The Starlite Drive-In was last operated by ABC Southeastern Theatres and closed for the final time in 1977. It was demolished a short time after to make way for the Cross Hills Market, the area’s shopping center.

In dedication to the Starlite Drive-In, the nearby Twilite Drive-In five miles south on the 3800 block of Two Notch Road was renamed the Starlite Drive-In in honor of the former theatre in November 1980 until closure in September 1985.
