Star Theatre

Not to be confused with the later Gordon Theatre (1919) last operated as Loew’s Star Theatre at 73 Clinton Avenue North (which has its own page on Cinema Treasures). The Star Theatre was located in the South Wedge district to the south of the city center and was one block away from the the Princess/Rexy/Fine Arts Theatre at 704 South Avenue (which has its own page on Cinema Treasures) which had opened in July 1912 . The Star Theatre was built on the site of a house that burned down in 1911 under suspicious circumstances (the owners were charged with arson and insurance fraud). The Star Theatre was opened in 1913. It was operated by Daniel W. Egan (1871-1942) who had a varied career as a salesman, hotel manager, boxing promoter and later in life as a deputy sheriff and constable. He also at one time owned the Murray Theatre and Pullman Theatre both in Rochester, which both have their own pages on Cinema Treasures.

In 1915 Daniel Egan sold the Star Theatre to George Shafer. It was still operating as a movie theatre in 1918, but had closed by 1919 when it was remodeled to the plans of architect J.H. Oberlies with the auditorium divided down the middle and it became a garage. By 1929 and for many decades it was home to a rug cleaning business. The building survives today in use as Hedonist Artisan Chocolates since 2007 and a Gourmet Ice Cream store.
