Cinema Timis

Located at the base of a large apartment block in the city centre of Timisoara, in western Romania, it is not known when Cinema Timis originally opened. (It was named after Timis County, of which Timisoara is the principal city.) There was one screen, with 624 seats.

When I visited, in May 2023, the cinema was supposedly nearing the end of a major restoration that began back in February 2022, but there was clearly still a lot of work to be done.

The ‘new’ Cinema Timis will have two principal auditoriums. The larger one will have 490 seats, a fixed screen and sound system, and be used for film screenings and concerts, while the smaller one, with 80 seats, will be equipped for smaller-scale live concerts, plays and shows. (I believe this smaller hall will be in space previously occupied by Club 30 nightclub.) There will be a café on the ground floor.

This work has been funded by the city council as part of its project to restore the arts to the city. This particular scheme is estimated to be costing around 16.1m lei (around £2.8m).
