Located on Market Street, just to the north of Cockburn Street. The Capitol Theatre was opened in late-July 1950 with Joel McCrea in “Stars in My Crown”. It was built for and operated by Percy Pinder who also owned and operated the smaller Rainbow Theatre. The Capitol Theatre had 750-seats in stalls & circle levels. It was equipped to be able to be used as a live theatre and plays were often produced here. It was equipped with a Hammond organ.
Although the owner/operator of the Capitol Theatre was a native black man, it was not a segregated theatre as both white & black patrons were welcome.
The Capitol Theatre building is now used by Purity Bakery.
