Manager Paul Swanson opened his 300-seat Plaza Theatre on the site of a former multi-name hardware store on March 10, 1935 with Claudette Colbert in “Imitation Of Life” along with the Walter Lantz cartoon “Jolly Little Elves” and a newsreel. The theater was part of the Odd Fellow Block on Center Street.

Throughout much of the late-1950’s and the first half of the 1960’s, the Plaza Theatre had multiple brief closures. After being taken over by the town’s community group in September 1965, it had a little more success after reopening the following month after a (yet again) brief closure.

The Plaza Theatre closed for the final time sometime in the late-1960’s and eventually became a hotel in May 1974.
