Cine-Centa Manurewa

The first new modern purpose-built suburban cinema in Auckland opened 1970 by independent exhibitor Ray Melrose serving Manukau City - the fastest growing area of the city. It featured many firsts: unique individual-style seating, luxurious wall-to-wall carpet, floor to ceiling orange drapes and its own private carpark directly outside the front door.

Unsuccessfully twinned in the mid-1970’s but restored back to single screen in 1983 when it was refurbished with upgrades including platter, xenon & 4-channel stereo sound. Like all other Auckland independent suburban cinemas it struggled getting access to first release films until it became part of Skyline Cinemas in 1985 - a joint venture with Kerridge-Odeon & Amalgamated Theatres. It traded very well until Village Force opened their new multiplex 5kms away in 1990. Converted to a church.
