The Theatre Historical Society archive has the MGM Theatre Report for the Leavitt; it’s Card # 417. Address is Main St. There is an exterior photo dated March 30, 1941. Condition is Fair. The report says that the theater opened about 1926, was showing MGM movies, had 624 seats, and was a summer operation. A competing theater in Ogunquit was the Ogunquit Square Theatre. 1940 population was 2,100.

What a nice-looking movie theatre! Although I don’t reside in Ogonquit, ME, I sincerely hope that they’re able to raise the necessary funds for going digital.

As a regular patron of the Leavitt, I can attest that they have been up and running, showing new blockbusters, movie classics, and hosting local film festivals & music entertainers. However, they are in need of new digital equipment. For anyone interested in keeping this fantastic theater alive, please help spread the word about their Kickstarter campaign: http://kck.st/HhQ8MO

The March 25, 1922, issue of the trade journal Domestic Engineering said that a Mrs. Libby, operator of a tea room in Kennebunk, intended to build a building with a movie theater and two stores in Ogunquit. Plans for the $25,000 project had been drawn by Kennebunk architect W.E. Barry.

The owner has been trying to sell the building (which includes the theater and 2 small retail spaces) for several years. It is vastly overpriced for the location (no parking, no room for building expansion and in a location that becomes a wasteland once Labor Day hits). It will be difficult to make the financials work so that the building can continue operating as a theater if it sells anywhere near its asking price. Just patiently waiting for the price to come down while hoping that a developer doesn’t buy it and turn it in to condos.

This theater has been open for the 2008 summer season, showing current releases. However, it has a “For Sale” sign on it.

A friend went by there in August 2005 and says it was open. He thinks the “For Rent” message refers to a space in the building. Their section of Ogunquit’s website currently shows one movie show for Sept., and one in late-October 2005.
